Being out of your element is a very vulnerable and exhilarating experience at the same time. Humans are just like any other animal that have to learn how to adapt to not only different situations, but also to different climates. My match is the snow. It is very interesting to think that snow is the exact same molecule as liquid water…a medium that I feel comfortable in. I am not scared of water, but initial encounters in the snow can be quite terrifying for a fishy out of water. Snow is something that has been very foreign to me in my life and even after living a year in Germany it is hard to put mittens and coats on. I am learning how to adapt and I am learning how to snowboard. Snow hurts. Badly. 10x more than water. But, when confronted with a challenge, all I can do is respond the way any other animal would. I try to survive and I try to win. I become a player on a foreign battlefield and try to make the snow my home.

Smog hates rain
Rain changes our environment and makes the day-after weather awesome. Showers make people feel cleansed so I can imagine how amazing the earth must feel when it gets a good beating. Go to vantage points after a heavy rain...always. Then...try to save what the air smells like.
Today LA showed me the sickest and most pristine view I have ever seen of the heart of Southern California. It was apparent today when I viewed Long Beach all the way from the Getty Museum. Not only that, but the Santa Monica, Santa Anita, San Gabriel and San Bernardino snow capped mountains that were concavely punctuated by the geography of the gleaming Pacific. This scene created a surreal biodome of the bustling city amid the diverse topography of the region. A city sandwiched between snowy mountains and the largest ocean. Sexy.
I wish I had a better camera...this blog does not help much either. Nevertheless, go and see it for yourself :)

H2O
I often remind myself how important this molecule is in my life. At least once a day, I catch myself pondering the ridiculous properties of water. So simple. Yet, it is the most unique molecule on our planet that defies the traditional rules of chemistry and defines our existence. Without water, of course there would be no life, but SHIT I would lose a lot of my hobbies, smell really bad and not pay as much to live in Southern California.
It seems integral that I begin with this love affair between 2 hydrogens and 1 oxygen. Their affinity for each other is rather disgusting and easily manifested. If any of my friends were ever that clingy I would definitely have to break it up, but in this case, I know this affinity results in awesome magnificence. My love and respect for marine ecosystems, as well as my desire to create environmental and social change, begins with this SMALL molecule that when multiplied creates our rivers, lakes, streams and oceans. These water sources harvest and house vast organisms that contribute to the health and integrity of our global ecosystem--and that warrants respect. In an overpopulated world dominated by humans, this is naturally an ongoing-bloody battle.
So here is what it is. I know there has to be a marvelous arrangement in this universe. Scientifically speaking, we are all connected through biological processes that initiate cyclic interactions within and among us. We are.
MESSAGE TO YOU HUMANS:
Get off your high horse.
We cannot and will NOT ever be able to live alone as a species.
We are a carefully woven matrix and some of the most important players are the ones in the ocean...our origin.
